Saponification
- Saponification is the break down of an ester because of its reaction withy water under basic conditions to create an alcohol and the salt of a carboxylic acid .
- Saponification is basically in simple words, the reaction of a base with a fat or oil to make soap
- Triglycerides (oil) are reacted with hydroxides to produce glycerol and a fatty acid salt, called 'soap'
- This reaction is catalyzed by a strong acid or base
- This is what causes the bubbles to form once the bath bomb is submersed in water
- As the bath bomb reacts with the water in the tub, soap will be created in the water
- Our bath bomb consists of olive oil which is Oleic Acid this will add conditioning and moisturizing properties to the bomb.
